Expert Ways to Stay Motivated, Not Today Slump!

Over the pandemic the world has moved from working in the office to building home offices. Lots of people struggle with the “working from home” environment, needing staying motivated and focused. Getting distracted is usually an unhelpful cycle and it can be really difficult and frustrating to try and pull yourself out of it. Here are some tips to help reset, get motivated, and have a more productive day!

Tip #1 – Listen to Music

Music helps keep parts of your brain active so the other parts can focus. Find music that you enjoy and see what works best for you! Lots of people recommend classical or instrumental music so the lyrics don’t distract you and you can stay motivated. Music also helps stimulate the creative part of your brain. Most jobs require some creative elements, whether it be in the arts, or problem solving and critical thinking, so music can help your creative mind flow!

Tip #2 – Free Writing

Another way to help with creativity is free writing. Free writing is simply a don’t-take-your-pen-off-the-paper type of journaling. Get a pen and paper and just write for 5 minutes straight, don’t let your pen come off the paper, even if it means just writing “I don’t know what to write” over and over again. It can be difficult to get into the flow of things the first couple times you do this, but after a while you’ll start getting better at it. You don’t have to worry about it being neat, or having perfect grammar, or even using the “right” words. The purpose of the exercise is to get your brain motivated.

Tip #3 – Get Your Blood Moving

Try getting up every hour to get your blood moving. Your brain needs blood in order to work properly. If you’re sitting for 7-10 hours a day, your brain won’t be getting enough circulation so it’s important to get up and move. Try doing 2 pushups, or 5 jumping jacks. Even just walking around your office can help get your blood flowing. Getting up and moving every hour will also help with your posture and maintaining proper ergonomics. Back pain and shoulder pain, even just general discomfort will cause distraction. Being able to keep proper posture will help you stay focused for longer and be more productive!

What About Burnout?

First of all, what even is burnout? Burnout happens when your body is too stressed for a long period of time. In order to protect itself and you, your mind starts to shut down and you start to see exhaustion, lack of motivation, not being creative, and frustration or general indifference towards your life.

You can stretch all you want, and listen to music till your heart’s content, but if you’re burned out you will not be productive. The only way to heal from burnout is rest. We all know saying you’ll take time to rest, and actually taking the time to rest are two very different things. Life is expensive. If you don’t have vacation time, or you’re trying to save up for a vacation, but just can’t quite make it work, you’ll probably just give up on the idea all together.

There is a Better Way, I promise…

I know too many people that have worked themselves into the ground. Work has taken away valuable time from their families, the freedom to enjoy their own time. Their job has taken advantage of them and abused their skills. But so many hard working, intelligent people have been conned into thinking this is their only option.

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be like these guys ?
